Black Lawmakers Rally Behind Biden, Despite Growing Concerns

The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) is known for its significant influence within the Democratic Party and its close ties with President Joe Biden. Despite this, only one of its approximately 60 members has called for Biden to step down from his re-election campaign due to concerns about his age and electability. The CBC's support for Biden varies, with some members expressing strong backing while others are more sceptical.

Lawmakers Back Biden Amid Doubts

Support and Skepticism Among CBC Members

Rep. Joyce Beatty, a former CBC chair, believes Biden can campaign effectively enough to defeat Trump. "Biden is at his best against the odds," she said. Rep. Gwen Moore echoed this sentiment, stating, "I am a Biden delegate. I will only take directions from Joe Biden, not the Fourth Estate, not the billionaires, and not from my very influential colleagues."

However, cracks in support appeared when Rep. Marc Veasey of Texas became the first CBC member to call for Biden's withdrawal. Veasey stated that ending Biden's campaign would be "the responsible and patriotic thing to do." This sentiment was shared by three other Democrats in a joint statement.

Impact of Black Voter Support

Black voters played a crucial role in helping Biden secure the Democratic nomination four years ago and defeat Donald Trump. Whether Black lawmakers continue to support Biden could be critical as pressure mounts within the Democratic Party for him to end his campaign. According to an AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, nearly two-thirds of Democrats nationwide believe Biden should step aside for another candidate. Black Democrats are divided on this issue.

Biden's approval ratings among Black Americans have declined since he took office, reflecting weakened enthusiasm. Despite this, the CBC remains a stronghold of support for Biden. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a CBC member, stated, "President Biden, as I've said repeatedly, is our nominee," calling him "one of the most accomplished American presidents in our history."

Concerns Over Age and Performance

The debate on June 27 between Biden and Trump raised concerns about Biden's age and ability to persuade doubtful voters. During the debate, Biden gave meandering answers and often seemed to lose his train of thought while responding to Trump's attacks. This performance led to immediate panic among Democrats.

In response to the growing concerns, Biden quickly held a virtual call with the CBC to thank them for their support. Many CBC members believe that any party infighting could harm the interests of Black Americans and their priority of defeating Trump.

Strategic Focus on Mobilizing Black Communities

CBC members have emphasised the importance of focusing on mobilising Black communities, who are a consistent voting bloc for Democrats. Antjuan Seawright, a Democratic strategist and senior advisor to Rep. Jim Clyburn, stated, "What you hear and see from Black voters is a true reflection of the simple fact that in every election we are casting a survival vote."

Clyburn remains one of Biden's most influential supporters but has expressed openness to a hypothetical "mini-primary" should Biden step aside. However, he later clarified that he was speaking hypothetically.

Events and Public Appearances

Before an attempted assassination on Trump, Biden was set to hold events focused on Black and Latino voters. The White House cancelled a planned appearance on Monday to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act at the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin due to these events.

Biden delivered remarks at the annual convention of the NAACP on Tuesday, where he said "our politics have gotten too heated" and urged Americans to "stand against all violence." He linked the attack on Trump's life to recent mass shootings and police killings of unarmed Black Americans.

Challenges Ahead

Biden's scheduled remarks at the UnidosUS national convention were cancelled after he tested positive for COVID-19. This diagnosis sidelined him as calls for his resignation grew within his party.

Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York highlighted the need for a serious reckoning with the down-ballot effect of whoever is nominated by the party. He stressed that decisions should be based on "an unsentimental analysis of the cold hard numbers — which have no personal feelings or political loyalties."

Among Black activists and civil rights leaders, there is concern about low voter enthusiasm as communities face issues like rising living costs. NAACP President Derrick Johnson stated that African Americans want a president who will unify the country and focus on solutions rather than creating division through dog whistles and soundbites.

The outcome of whether Black lawmakers continue their support for Biden will be crucial in determining his chances in November's election. High levels of pessimism among Black voters could significantly impact competitive races across the country.
