Biden Falters in Addressing Abortion Rights During Debate Against Trump

President Joe Biden had ample opportunity during the presidential debate to articulate his stance on abortion rights amidst increasing restrictions and deteriorating medical care for women since Roe v. Wade was overturned. However, his responses were criticised as unclear and confusing. Abortion rights advocates expressed disappointment, suggesting Biden's performance was lacking.

Bidens Abortion Rights Debate Misstep

Reproductive rights have proven to be a strong issue for Democrats. Voters consistently support safeguarding abortion rights in ballot initiatives. According to AP-NORC data from last June, about two-thirds of U.S. adults and nearly 9 in 10 Democrats believe abortion should be legal in most cases.

Abortion Rights Debate

During the debate, Biden struggled to explain the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion. When asked about his stance on abortion restrictions, he stated he supports Roe v. Wade, mentioning its three trimesters. His explanation was muddled, leaving advocates wanting more clarity.

The president attempted to recover the next day at a North Carolina rally, criticising Trump: "Folks, for all his lies, we learned some important truths about Donald Trump last night. We learned he's still proud to be the person that killed Roe v. Wade." Despite this effort, many felt it was too late.

Impact of Roe v. Wade Overturn

The fall of Roe v. Wade has placed abortion rights largely in the hands of state legislatures, resulting in varied laws across the country. At least 25 million women now live in states with significant abortion restrictions. This shift has led to severe consequences for reproductive health in the U.S., including delayed miscarriage care and paused fertility treatments.

Women who never intended to end their pregnancies have faced life-threatening situations due to lack of emergency treatment. Routine reproductive medical care is also diminishing in states with strict bans.

Trump's Claims and Biden's Missed Opportunities

Former President Donald Trump boasted about appointing three Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. He also made false claims about Democratic-led states passing laws allowing infanticide, which is criminalised in every state.

Abortion rights advocates argue that terms like "late-term abortions" are used to stigmatize abortions later in pregnancy, which are rare and usually due to serious complications. In 2020, less than 1% of abortions in the U.S. occurred at or after 21 weeks, according to the CDC.

Despite criticism of Biden's debate performance, abortion rights groups continue to support him due to concerns over what Trump might do if re-elected. Mini Timmaraju, head of Reproductive Freedom for All, stated: "Donald Trump has shown us exactly who he is and what he is capable of."

Biden's Record and Campaign Strategy

Although Biden has long been seen as an imperfect messenger on abortion rights due to his Catholic faith and reluctance to use the word "abortion," his views have evolved alongside the Democratic Party. He frames the issue as one of health care and personal freedom, resonating with many voters.

Vice President Kamala Harris has been a key spokesperson on this issue for the administration. Additionally, Biden's campaign features women affected by the lack of abortion access since Roe's fall, highlighting their stories in ads.

Jennifer Driver from the State Innovation Exchange noted that Biden missed crucial opportunities during the debate to fact-check Trump and address falsehoods: "He just could not accurately and effectively push back on the lies that were being presented."

According to a recent AP-NORC poll, about 4 in 10 Americans approve of how Biden handles abortion policy, making it one of his stronger issues despite disagreements over his approach. Seven in 10 Democrats approve compared to about 3 in 10 Independents and roughly 2 in 10 Republicans.

Biden's campaign continues to focus on contrasting his stance with Trump's record on abortion rights while addressing voters' concerns through personal stories and targeted messaging.
