Biden and Harris Rally Black Voters, Warn Against Trump's Second Term

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris addressed Black voters in Philadelphia, emphasizing the importance of their support in the upcoming election. Biden criticized former President Donald Trump's "MAGA lies" and warned about the potential consequences of a second Trump presidency. The Democratic duo thanked Black voters for their role in their 2020 victory and highlighted their administration's impact on improving lives for Black Americans.

Rallying Black Voters Against Trump

At Girard College, a predominantly Black boarding school, Biden accused Trump of promoting misinformation to regain the White House. He cited Trump's response to the George Floyd protests and his continued insistence on the guilt of the Central Park Five. The visit marked the beginning of a summer-long effort to engage with Black student organizations, community groups, and faith centers.

Biden and Harris also discussed abortion rights and the judiciary. Biden pledged to codify the protections of Roe vs. Wade if elected, while Harris criticized Trump's influence on the Supreme Court. She claimed that Trump handpicked three justices with the intention of overturning Roe vs. Wade, which they ultimately did.

According to an Associated Press-NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research poll published in March, Biden's approval among Black adults has dropped from 94% to 55%. The economy has been a significant issue for Biden since 2022, with inflation reaching a 40-year high. Additionally, there has been discontent within the Black community over Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Black voter turnout could be crucial for Biden in closely contested states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Trump has been positioning himself as a better president for Black voters than Biden, criticizing him on immigration and its impact on Black and Hispanic populations.

The Biden campaign aims to remind Black voters of their administration's achievements during his term. Biden listed accomplishments such as record funding for historically Black colleges and universities, forgiveness of federal student loan debt, and pardons for simple possession of marijuana. He also highlighted economic gains under his presidency, including a decrease in Black unemployment rates and an increase in Black household wealth.

Biden also mentioned his appointment of Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black female justice on the US Supreme Court and his selection of Harris as the first Black woman to serve as vice president. The president's recent engagements with Black community members include hosting plaintiffs from the 1954 Supreme Court decision that struck down institutionalized racial segregation in public schools, delivering a commencement address at Morehouse College in Atlanta, and virtually addressing Rev. Al Sharpton's racial justice conference.
