Biden Commutes Death Row Sentences: Families Express Relief and Anger Over Decision

Families of victims and others affected by crimes leading to federal death row convictions expressed mixed emotions after President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of 37 inmates. These individuals, previously sentenced to death, will now serve life imprisonment without parole. The inmates were convicted of various crimes, including the killings of police officers and federal personnel, as well as involvement in fatal robberies and drug deals.

Bidens Death Row Commutations Spark Mixed Reactions

Three inmates remain on federal death row: Dylann Roof, responsible for the 2015 Charleston church shooting; Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the Boston Marathon Bomber; and Robert Bowers, who committed the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history at Pittsburgh's Tree of Life Synagogue in 2018. Opponents of capital punishment praised Biden's decision, while supporters of Donald Trump criticised it as undermining common decency.

Reactions from Victims' Families

Donnie Oliverio, a retired Ohio police officer whose partner was killed by an inmate whose sentence was commuted, expressed that executing the killer would not have brought peace. "The president has done what is right here," Oliverio stated. However, Bryan Hurst's widow, Marissa Gibson, described Biden's action as distressing and undermining the federal justice system.

Heather Turner, whose mother was killed in a 2017 bank robbery, called the commutation a "gross abuse of power." She expressed frustration over the time spent in court hoping for justice. "At no point did the president consider the victims," Turner wrote on Facebook.

Conflicting Views on Roof's Sentence

The decision to keep Dylann Roof on death row sparked varied reactions among families of his victims. Some forgave him but still wanted him executed. Felicia Sanders, who survived the shooting by shielding her granddaughter, called Biden's decision not to spare Roof a "wonderful Christmas gift." Michael Graham, whose sister was killed by Roof, argued that Roof's lack of remorse justified his death penalty.

Conversely, Rev. Sharon Richer criticised Biden for not commuting Roof's sentence. She highlighted the emotional toll on victims' families due to ongoing appeals. "I need the President to understand that when you put a killer on death row, you also put their victims' families in limbo," Richer stated.

Political Reactions and Advocacy

Biden faced pressure from advocacy groups to commute federal death sentences. Anthony D. Romero from the ACLU praised Biden for rejecting past brutal policies. However, Republicans like Sen. Tom Cotton criticised the decision for its perceived moral inconsistency due to exceptions made for three inmates.

Louisiana's Attorney General Liz Murrill condemned the commutation of Len Davis's sentence. Davis was a former policeman convicted of orchestrating a murder. Murrill argued that states should ensure justice for victims of heinous crimes instead of relying on federal authorities.

Attorney's Response and Inmate Remorse

Norris Holder and Billie Jerome Allen were among those whose sentences were commuted for their roles in a 1997 bank robbery that resulted in a guard's death. Holder's attorney, Madeline Cohen, thanked Biden for commuting his sentence and highlighted racial bias in Holder's case. "Norris has always been deeply remorseful for the pain his actions caused," Cohen stated.

Biden’s decision reflects ongoing debates about capital punishment in America. While some see it as a step towards reforming an unjust system, others view it as neglecting justice for victims' families.
