Biden Asserts Hamas Incapable of Major Attack Against Israel, Urges Cease-Fire

AP President Joe Biden recently made a significant statement regarding the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, emphasizing that Hamas is "no longer capable" of launching another large-scale attack on Israel. This assertion came as he encouraged both parties to negotiate a deal that would see the release of remaining hostages in exchange for an extended cease-fire. The backdrop to this development is the nearly 8-month-old war between Israel and Hamas, with recent reports indicating that Israeli forces have intensified their operations in Rafah, a key area in southern Gaza.

Biden: Hamas Cant Attack Israel

Biden's remarks were made amidst a critical juncture in the conflict, highlighting a proposed three-phase deal by Israeli officials aimed at reaching a cease-fire agreement with Hamas. "This is truly a decisive moment," Biden noted, pointing out the opportunity for Hamas to demonstrate its commitment to peace through accepting the cease-fire proposal. The conflict escalated following an attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, which resulted in the tragic loss of approximately 1,200 lives, mostly civilians, and led to the abduction of around 250 individuals. According to Israeli sources, about 100 hostages remain captive in Gaza, alongside the remains of an estimated 30 individuals.

The cease-fire negotiations hit an impasse earlier in the month, largely due to Hamas's insistence on assurances for a complete end to the war and the full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza as conditions for releasing all hostages—a stance that Israel has been unwilling to accept. This deadlock has occurred despite concerted efforts by the US and other international mediators to broker a deal that would prevent further escalation of violence, particularly an anticipated Israeli invasion of Rafah.

The ongoing conflict and its complexities underscore the challenges facing both Israel and Hamas as they navigate the delicate process of negotiation. With Biden's latest statements shedding light on the situation, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that can bring an end to the hostilities and lead to a sustainable peace in the region.
