Barack Obama offers condolences to Italy over devastating quake
Washington, Aug 25: US President Barack Obama on Wednesday offered his "deepest" condolences to the people of Italy after a devastating earthquake struck central Italy overnight.
The death toll in the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that rocked the Italian city of Rieti on Wednesday rose to 159, Xinhua quoted Italy's civil protection agency.

In a telephone talk with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Obama saluted the quick action of first responders and volunteers who have been working to save lives, said a statement issued by the White House.
Reaffirming the "strong bonds of friendship" between the US and Italy, Obama underscored that the US stands ready to provide any assistance needed during this difficult time, said the statement.
