Bangladesh Summons Indian High Commissioner Amid Border Tensions

Bangladesh's foreign ministry recently called in Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma due to escalating border tensions. Bangladesh accused India of attempting to build fences at five spots along their shared border, which they claim breaches a bilateral agreement. The meeting took place on Sunday afternoon, with Verma arriving at the ministry around 3:00 pm.

During the meeting, Verma engaged in discussions with Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin for about 45 minutes. Despite the significant nature of the talks, no official statement was issued by Bangladesh's interim government afterward. However, officials did confirm that the high commissioner had been summoned.

Strained Relations Between Neighbours

The relationship between India and Bangladesh has been strained in recent months. Earlier this week, Dhaka chose not to attend an event organised by India to mark the 150th anniversary of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Bangladesh cited 'restrictions on non-essential foreign travel at government expense' as their reason for not participating.

The decision to skip the IMD event is seen as a reflection of the current tensions between the two countries. Both nations have historically shared close ties, but recent developments have put a strain on their diplomatic relations.

While no official statements were made following Verma's meeting with Uddin, it is clear that both sides are keenly aware of the importance of maintaining peace and cooperation along their shared border. The situation remains delicate, and further discussions may be necessary to resolve these issues amicably.
