Bangladesh Establishes Probe Committee to Investigate Violence in Chittagong Hill Districts
The Bangladesh government has announced plans to establish a high-level investigation committee. This committee will look into the recent violence in the Chittagong hill tracts. A delegation is set to visit Khagrachhari and Rangamati on Saturday to address the unrest that began on Wednesday, according to officials.

State-run news agency BSS, referencing a press release from the Inter-Services Public Relation Directorate (ISPR), urged citizens to assist law enforcement in maintaining peace in the affected districts. The interim government has instructed all forces to act with restraint and ensure residents' safety amid the recent violence and deaths.
Violence and Tensions in Hill Districts
The ISPR expressed concerns about potential severe riots following recent clashes. These clashes have resulted in at least four deaths, as reported by BDNews24. In response, Section 144 has been imposed in Khagrachhari municipal town, district headquarters, and Rangamati municipal area.
On September 18, a 30-year-old man was lynched by a mob for allegedly stealing a motorcycle in Khagrachhari district town. Police later recovered his body and returned it to his family after conducting a post-mortem examination.
Escalation of Violence
The following day, on September 19, a procession from Dhighinala College was attacked while passing through Boalkhali Bazar in Dighinala. Members of the UPDF main reportedly fired 20 to 30 rounds at the procession. In retaliation, an angry crowd set fire to several shops in Boalkhali Bazar.
During this clash, six individuals from both sides sustained injuries. An army patrol team eventually arrived at the scene and managed to control the situation, according to BSS reports.
Further Clashes and Fatalities
Later that night, tensions escalated when an agitated mob led by UPDF main obstructed an army patrol team in Swanirvar area of Khagrachhari town. The mob opened fire on the army personnel, prompting them to retaliate in self-defence. This exchange resulted in three fatalities, as stated by the ISPR release.
The government continues its efforts to restore peace and stability in these regions. Authorities are urging cooperation from all parties involved to prevent further violence and ensure community safety.
