Bangladesh: Hindu Monk Chinmoy Das Denied Bail, Legal Struggles Intensify
Chinmoy Krishna Das, a prominent Hindu monk and former ISKCON priest, is facing escalating legal challenges in Bangladesh after his arrest last week. The 55-year-old religious leader, who also served as a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, was detained at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in connection with a sedition case.
His arrest has sparked protests and heightened tensions, with his bail hearing on December 2, 2024, delayed due to the absence of legal representation, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Bail Hearing Delayed Amid Legal Complications
Chinmoy Das's bail hearing, initially expected to take place this week, has been postponed until January 2, 2025. The delay was caused by the unavailability of a lawyer to represent him in court. This setback has left the Hindu monk in legal limbo, while his supporters, including members of ISKCON, continue to demand his release.
Das, once a divisional organizing secretary for ISKCON in Chattogram, is well-regarded within the Hindu community in Bangladesh. His arrest has garnered significant attention, both within Bangladesh and internationally, with many questioning the political motivations behind the sedition charges, as reported by Hindustan Times.
Advocate Under Attack
In a disturbing twist, the case has also seen an alarming development. Advocate Ramen Roy, who had defended Chinmoy Krishna Das in a legal matter in Bangladesh, was brutally attacked by a group of Islamists. The attack left Roy critically injured, and he is now fighting for his life in a hospital. His only offence, according to sources, was his involvement in defending Das. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of legal professionals and human rights activists in the region, as per media reports.
ISKCON Kolkata spokesperson Radharamn Das condemned the attack, calling for prayers for Roy's recovery. The violence has sparked further outrage, with many pointing to a growing climate of religious intolerance and hostility towards Hindus in Bangladesh.
Protests and International Concerns
The arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das has also ignited protests in India. In Agartala, thousands took to the streets, demonstrating against his detention and what they perceived as increasing persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh. Protesters breached the premises of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission, reportedly engaging in vandalism.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India expressed its regret over the incident, emphasizing that consular properties should not be targeted. The government assured that security measures were being enhanced at Bangladeshi diplomatic missions in India., as per media report.
The Road Ahead
As Chinmoy Krishna Das's legal battle continues, his supporters remain hopeful that justice will prevail. However, the delay in his bail hearing and the violent attack on his advocate highlight the challenges facing the Hindu community and religious leaders in Bangladesh. With protests ongoing and international scrutiny increasing, the situation remains tense, and all eyes are on the next steps in the legal process.
