Honduras Prison Escape Attempt Leaves Two Inmates Dead and Three Injured Amid Ongoing Violence
An attempted escape at a men's prison in Tamara, Honduras, resulted in two inmates dead and three injured. The incident occurred early Thursday, highlighting ongoing issues of gang violence and overcrowding in the country's prisons. Authorities reported that 72 inmates participated in the escape attempt, but details on how the casualties happened were not provided.

Military police intervened to manage the situation. Col. Ramiro Muñoz, the forces commander, stated that one inmate died at the prison and another succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. "Everything is now calm and in order," Muñoz told local media. "This isn't going to set us back, there is no other prison in the world where this doesn't happen."
Prison System Challenges
The prisoners reportedly barricaded themselves inside a section of the facility around 4 a.m. to distract guards. Military police responded promptly, though further details were not disclosed by Muñoz. A forensic investigation is planned to clarify events and address any speculation surrounding the incident.
Last year, a riot at the women's prison in Tamara resulted in 46 deaths, prompting calls for reform in Honduras's prison system. Discussions emerged about adopting El Salvador's strict zero-tolerance prison model, implemented by President Nayib Bukele, as a potential solution.
Government Response
In June, President Xiomara Castro announced plans for a new "megaprison" with a capacity of 20,000 inmates. This initiative is part of broader efforts to tackle gang violence and improve the troubled prison system in Honduras. The government aims to address these longstanding issues through significant reforms.
The recent escape attempt underscores ongoing challenges within Honduras's correctional facilities. Overcrowding and gang-related violence remain critical concerns for authorities striving to maintain order and safety within prisons.
Efforts to reform the prison system continue as officials seek solutions to prevent similar incidents in the future. The government's commitment to addressing these issues reflects its determination to enhance security and stability across the nation's correctional institutions.
