Apple and Google Investigated by UK Watchdog for Mobile Browser Dominance and Innovation Stifling
Apple and Google are facing scrutiny from a UK watchdog over their control of mobile web browsers. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) suggests that these tech giants limit consumer choice, recommending an investigation under new UK digital regulations effective next year. The CMA criticises Apple for hindering innovation by restricting progressive web apps, which bypass app stores and their fees.

The CMA's provisional report highlights that Apple's restrictions prevent progressive web apps from thriving on iOS devices. This investigation follows an initial study revealing that Apple and Google dominate mobile ecosystems. The report also notes that both companies make their browsers the most accessible options for users, limiting competition.
Impact on Innovation and Competition
The CMA found that a revenue-sharing agreement between Apple and Google diminishes their motivation to compete in mobile browsers on Apple's iOS system. Both companies have expressed willingness to work with the CMA. However, Apple disagrees with the findings, arguing that the recommendations could compromise user privacy and security.
Google defends its Android operating system, stating it has increased consumer choice, lowered prices, and broadened access to smartphones and apps. Google emphasises its commitment to open platforms that empower users. This situation is part of a broader regulatory effort to address Big Tech's dominance on both sides of the Atlantic.
Regulatory Actions and Future Steps
Recently, US federal prosecutors proposed forcing Google to divest its Chrome browser to tackle its online search monopoly. The CMA's final report is expected by March. The watchdog plans to use the UK's upcoming digital competition rules, which grant new powers to regulate tech companies, to further investigate Apple and Google's roles in mobile ecosystems.
The CMA's actions reflect growing global efforts to curb the influence of major tech firms. By examining how these companies operate within mobile ecosystems, regulators aim to ensure fair competition and innovation in the digital marketplace.
