Former Albanian Environment Minister Lefter Koka is among several officials and businessmen sentenced to prison over bribery concerning an incinerator contract. The court found them guilty on charges including corruption, abuse of power, and money laundering.

On Monday, a former Albanian environment minister, seven other officials and four businessmen were convicted by the Special Court on Corruption and Organized Crime in Tirana, Albania. They were found guilty of bribery linked to a contract for the construction of an incinerator in western Albania. This case has brought to light deep-seated corruption within the country’s administration.

High-Profile Convictions

Albanian Corruption Scandal

The court sentenced Lefter Koka, who served as Environment Minister from 2013 to 2017, to six years and eight months imprisonment on charges of corruption, abuse of power and money laundering. In addition to his prison term, Koka was also barred from holding public posts for five years. The 59-year-old former minister had previously held positions as a lawmaker and mayor of Durres - a port city in western Albania.

Koka stands accused of accepting a bribe amounting to €3.7 million (approximately $4.1 million at that time) in exchange for awarding the incinerator contract in Fier - another city located in western Albania. Despite his conviction, Koka plans to appeal against the verdict.

Other Officials And Businessmen Involved

Besides Koka's conviction, seven other officials and four businessmen were also handed down prison sentences ranging between two to eight years on similar charges related to corruption and abuse of power. All defendants were implicated due their involvement in the concession contract concerning the Fier incinerator project.

Criminal Cases Launched Against Other Incinerators

In addition to this case involving Fier’s incinerator project, criminal cases have been launched against two other recently constructed incinerators within this Western Balkan nation; these projects are alleged sources of corrupt practices too.

This series of corruption cases involving high-profile individuals and major infrastructure projects has put a spotlight on Albania’s struggle with corruption, particularly within its public sector. The country's efforts to curb such illicit practices will be crucial as it seeks to strengthen its democratic institutions and enhance its prospects for European Union membership.

In conclusion, the sentencing of Lefter Koka and his co-defendants serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive issue of corruption in Albania. While these convictions represent progress in addressing this problem, they also underscore the need for continued vigilance and comprehensive reforms to eradicate systemic corruption. The future development trajectory of Albania hinges on its ability to tackle this issue head-on.
