Al-Jazeera Reports Two Journalists Killed in Israeli Strike in Gaza

Two Al-Jazeera reporters were killed in an Israeli strike in northern Gaza on Wednesday, according to the satellite news network. Correspondent Ismail al-Ghoul, 27, and cameraman Rami al-Rifi died in a blast that hit their car in Gaza City. An unidentified child also perished in the explosion, as reported by the Emergency and Ambulance Service.

Journalists Killed in Gaza Strike

The two journalists had been covering events at the Shati Refugee Camp. This camp is known as the birthplace of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed earlier that day in Tehran. Haniyeh had attended Masoud Pezeshkian's swearing-in ceremony as Iran's new president on Tuesday.

Journalists Under Threat

The deaths of these journalists bring the total number of media personnel killed in Gaza since the Israel-Hamas conflict began last October to 111. This figure includes 106 Palestinians, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. The remaining casualties are two Lebanese and three Israelis.

The bodies of al-Ghoul and al-Rifi were taken to al-Ahli hospital. Their colleague, Anas al-Sharif, provided a phone interview with Al-Jazeera from the hospital. Information about the child who died was not immediately available.

Calls for Accountability

United Nations spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric has called for a thorough investigation into the killings of these journalists. "Journalists everywhere need to be protected," he stated, emphasising accountability for such incidents.

The Palestinian Journalist Syndicate and Hamas have both accused Israel of assassinating the two reporters. The Israeli government has yet to comment on this specific strike.

Al-Jazeera's Challenges

In May, Israel closed Al-Jazeera's offices under a new law allowing it to shut down media outlets deemed security threats. The Israeli government claims Al-Jazeera has ties to Hamas, which the network denies. Many Hamas officials are based in Qatar, where Al-Jazeera is headquartered.

Throughout the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, now in its tenth month, Al-Jazeera has accused Israel of targeting its journalists. In December, Samer Abudaqa, one of their cameramen, was killed in a strike.

Personal Losses

Wael Dahdouh, Al-Jazeera's bureau chief in Gaza, experienced personal tragedy while reporting in late October. He learned on air that his wife, daughter, son, and grandchild had been killed in an Israeli airstrike. Another son working for Al-Jazeera was killed in January.

The situation remains tense as journalists continue to face significant risks while covering the conflict. The international community is watching closely for developments and responses from involved parties.
