After Calling Modi ‘Great’, Trump Warns India of New Tariffs

The US-India trade negotiations face challenges as President Trump threatens tariffs amidst complex diplomatic dynamics with Prime Minister Modi. Despite tensions, both nations continue dialogue to seek a beneficial agreement.

US President Donald Trump recently reignited discussions about tariffs, just days after sending Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a framed photo with the message: "Mr Prime Minister, you are great!" This gesture came amid ongoing trade negotiations between the two nations. Trump has often highlighted his personal rapport with Modi, despite the complex trade talks.

During a flight to Israel, Trump claimed he had prevented a potential nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan in May. He stated that his tariff threats played a crucial role in averting war. "I settled a few of the wars just based on tariffs," he remarked, mentioning that he threatened both countries with tariffs as high as 200% if they pursued conflict.

Trade Talks and Tariff Tensions

The US and India have been engaged in challenging trade discussions. Trump's commerce secretary Howard Lutnick and adviser Peter Navarro have been assertive, urging India to open its markets for a successful deal. However, India's foreign minister S Jaishankar has emphasized the country's "red lines" concerning its agricultural sectors.

In September, Trump criticized Modi's meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. He expressed concerns over India's growing ties with Russia and China, stating, "We've lost India and Russia to China." This sentiment was part of his broader narrative on international relations.

Diplomatic Dynamics

Despite these tensions, Modi has maintained a diplomatic approach. He has focused on promoting "swadeshi" or made-in-India goods while avoiding direct confrontation with Trump. The Indian government has consistently denied any third-party involvement in its ceasefire decisions related to Operation Sindoor in Kashmir.

Trump's tariff threats have also extended to other areas. He imposed a $100,000 fee for H-1B visas, predominantly used by Indian tech professionals working in the US. This move effectively ended the programme, adding another layer of complexity to US-India relations.

Personal Connections Amidst Political Challenges

The relationship between Trump and Modi is marked by personal gestures amidst political challenges. In October, Modi praised Trump's peace efforts in Gaza during a phone call. Shortly after, US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor met Modi carrying the framed photo from Trump.

Trump's claims of mediating peace between India and Pakistan were part of his broader narrative for a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. However, reports suggest India's refusal to acknowledge this mediation contributed to Trump's decision to impose 50% tariffs on India.

The ongoing trade talks are expected to enter their sixth round by mid-October. Despite setbacks due to tariffs, both nations continue to engage in dialogue aimed at reaching an agreement beneficial for both sides.
