Women Voters Take Center Stage As Jharkhand Elections Tackle Migration And Economic Woes

The upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections spotlight key social and economic issues while revealing a sharp political focus on vote-bank politics, particularly around women and migration concerns.

On October 14, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led government approved a significant increase in monthly financial assistance to economically vulnerable women under the Mukhyamantri Maiya Samman Yojana (MMSY), raising it from ₹1,000 to ₹2,500. This decision comes amid mounting competition with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has promised ₹2,100 monthly for women if elected. Women, who outnumber men in 32 out of 81 Assembly seats, have become a crucial demographic.

Women Voters Take Center Stage As Jharkhand Elections Tackle Migration And Economic Woes

The recent Lok Sabha election data further highlights this trend, as more women turned out to vote than men, attributed in part to large-scale male migration from Jharkhand in search of employment.

Migration has been a persistent issue in Jharkhand, pushing large numbers of men out of the state for work and often leaving women as the primary stakeholders in local electoral matters. This migration issue is especially pertinent in tribal and rural areas, where traditional employment opportunities have dwindled, forcing entire families to seek livelihoods outside.

Political parties recognise this reality and have thus shifted attention toward Jharkhand's remaining population-predominantly women.

Women voters outnumbered men in 68 Assembly constituencies during the recent Lok Sabha polls, pointing to a growing female electoral force. The Soren government's flagship scheme, Mukhyamantri Maiya Samman Yojana, aims to reach over 48 lakh women by providing economic support, a move that both the ruling coalition and opposition are betting on to attract female voters.

The BJP, meanwhile, has countered with the Gogo Didi Yojana, indicating how deeply political parties are invested in capturing this voter base.

Both JMM and BJP have fielded a record number of women candidates in this election, with the BJP nominating 14 female candidates in its first list alone.
