Vehicle Identified in Fauja Singhs Fatal Accident

Fauja Singh's life story is one of inspiration and resilience. Born in 1911 into a farming family, he began his marathon career at 89. Despite being born with weak legs, he became a global icon known as the "Turbaned Tornado." His achievements include being the first centenarian to complete a marathon and setting multiple records in international events.

Community and Leaders Mourn

Residents of Bias village are deeply saddened by Singh's passing. Mahinder Singh, a villager, mentioned that the accident occurred about 400 metres from Singh's home. Gurpreet Singh added that after being hit by the vehicle, Singh was rushed to a hospital but did not survive. The entire village mourns his loss, as he brought global recognition to their community.

Political leaders across party lines expressed their condolences. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Singh for inspiring Indian youth with his dedication to fitness. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann highlighted how Singh made the Sikh community proud worldwide through his long-distance running.

Legacy of an Icon

Fauja Singh's legacy extends beyond his athletic achievements. Last year, he participated in a walkathon with Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to raise awareness against drug abuse. His life journey continues to inspire future generations to pursue healthy lifestyles with determination and discipline.

The Punjab Assembly paid tribute to Singh during its special session. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ravjot Singh proposed honouring him in the House. Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and state Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring also expressed their sorrow over his death.

Efforts to Apprehend Driver

The Jalandhar police are actively working to trace the driver responsible for the hit-and-run incident. Senior Superintendent of Police Harvinder Singh stated that teams are set to arrest the driver and recover the vehicle soon. An FIR has been registered against the unknown driver under sections related to rash driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed deep sadness over Fauja Singh's demise. He admired Singh's healthy lifestyle and longevity, which seemed impossible in today's era. Saini noted that Singh's energy and message of healthy living continue to inspire many.

A Life Celebrated

Singh's remarkable journey included marathons in London, New York, and Hong Kong. In 2011, at age 100, he participated in an invitational meet in Toronto named in his honour, breaking several world records for his age group. Despite personal challenges, he remained resilient throughout his life.

Pargat Singh, Congress MLA from Jalandhar Cantt and former Indian hockey captain, remarked on how Fauja Singh inspired generations with his strength and commitment even at 114. His legacy will endure in those striving for a healthier Punjab free from drugs.

The last rites for Fauja Singh are expected after relatives from abroad arrive. A family member mentioned that many relatives live overseas, including in the UK and Canada, which may delay proceedings by a couple of days.
