President Murmu praised Benegal for pioneering a new cinematic style and creating numerous classics. She described him as an institution who mentored many artists. His exceptional contributions were recognised with awards like the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Padma Bhushan. "My condolences to his family and countless admirers," she posted on X.

Impact on Indian Cinema

Prime Minister Modi expressed deep sadness over Benegal's death, noting his storytelling's profound impact on Indian cinema. "His works will continue to be admired by people from different walks of life," he shared on X, extending condolences to Benegal's family and admirers.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge highlighted Benegal's significant contributions to the art form, marked by thought-provoking storytelling and dedication to social issues. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called him a visionary filmmaker who brought India's stories to life with depth and sensitivity.

Benegal, who ushered in a new era in Hindi cinema during the 1970s and 1980s with films like "Ankur," "Mandi," and "Manthan," died at 90 in a Mumbai hospital after battling chronic kidney disease. Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur remembered him as the man who changed Indian cinema's direction, creating stars out of great actors like Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil.

Tributes from Film Industry

Actor Manoj Bajpayee expressed heartbreak over Benegal's passing, calling him a visionary who redefined storytelling. "It was an absolute honor to have had the opportunity to work with him," Bajpayee said on X. Akshay Kumar also mourned his loss, describing Benegal as one of India's finest filmmakers.

Kajol shared her thoughts on Instagram, stating that Benegal's contributions to Indian cinema are immeasurable. Karan Johar thanked him for stories that shaped incredible talent and pushed boundaries in Indian cinema. Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra praised Benegal for capturing the poetry of ordinary lives.

Political Leaders' Condolences

Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi paid tribute, acknowledging Benegal's role in discovering and nurturing India's brightest film talents. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Odisha's former chief minister Naveen Patnaik also expressed their condolences.

Nitish Kumar noted that Benegal's demise created a void in art and filmmaking, praying for strength for his family during this tragic time. Patnaik described him as a doyen of Indian cinema, while Sandip Ray recalled their personal bond and Benegal's documentary on his father, Satyajit Ray.

A Lasting Legacy

Benegal passed away at Mumbai's Wockhardt Hospital at 6:38 pm after suffering from chronic kidney disease for several years. His daughter Pia Benegal confirmed his death, stating that his condition had worsened significantly. He is survived by his daughter and wife Nira Benegal.

Just nine days before his passing, actors who had worked with him gathered to celebrate his 90th birthday, almost as a final farewell to the filmmaker who gave them some of their best roles. His legacy will endure through the stories he told and the lives he touched.
