Silchar Medical College Takes A U-Turn From Their Controversial Safety Advisory - What Happened?

Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) faced significant backlash after it issued an advisory recommending that female doctors and staff avoid going alone to isolated areas at night.

The advisory, issued by Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, the institution's principal and chief superintendent, was a response to the recent horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Silchar Medical College Takes A U-Turn - Here's Why

The advisory, which has since been canceled, recommended that female medical professionals, students, and staff refrain from leaving their hostel or lodging rooms during night hours unless absolutely necessary. It also advised avoiding off-campus activities during late or odd hours and suggested maintaining a means of emergency contact.

Additionally, it urged that individuals be cautious about associating with unknown or suspicious persons and advised doctors to remain emotionally composed and alert during duty hours. The advisory sparked protests among students, who criticized it for making them feel "deeply saddened and ashamed" and for failing to address the core issues related to safety at SMCH.

The Junior Doctors' Association (JDA) condemned the advisory, arguing that it was inadequate and did not tackle the underlying problems. In response to the backlash, Dr. Gupta announced the cancellation of the advisory and assured that a new one, aimed at improving safety and security for women doctors, students, and all healthcare workers on campus, would be issued soon.

The incident highlights the ongoing need for enhanced security measures and a supportive environment for healthcare professionals.
