SC Rejects Bengal Govt's Appeal Against Calcutta HC Order For CBI Probe On Sandeshkhali Case
The Supreme Court has dismissed the West Bengal government's appeal against a Calcutta High Court order.
The order directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate allegations of land-grabbing and sexual assault in Sandeshkhali.
The bench, comprising Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan, questioned why the state would be interested in protecting certain individuals.

During the hearing, the bench remarked, "Why should the state be interested in protecting someone?"
This query was posed after the counsel for West Bengal requested an adjournment. The court's decision came as a response to the state's plea challenging the high court's April 10 directive.
Supreme Court's Stand
The Supreme Court had previously asked why the state should act as a petitioner to protect private interests. The state government argued that the high court's order demoralised its machinery, including the police force. Despite this, the apex court maintained its stance and dismissed the appeal with a simple "Thank you. Dismissed."
The CBI is already probing incidents related to attacks on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in Sandeshkhali. Three FIRs have been registered concerning events that occurred on January 5. The investigation is being monitored by the court to ensure thoroughness.
Calcutta High Court's Directives
The Calcutta High Court instructed the CBI to file a detailed report on alleged illegal land conversions for pisciculture. This involves inspecting revenue records and physically examining lands purportedly converted from agricultural use. Additionally, the CBI was tasked with investigating crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.
Sandeshkhali, located in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, became a political hotspot when villagers accused local strongman Sheikh Shahjahan and his aides of coercion involving land-grab and sexual assault. These allegations led to Shahjahan's arrest.
Political Repercussions
BJP and TMC have traded accusations over Sandeshkhali. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also commented on another incident involving public beating in Uttar Dinajpur, allegedly by members of TMC.
The high court mandated that the CBI submit a comprehensive report on these issues at the next hearing date. This directive aims to ensure transparency and accountability in addressing these serious allegations.
This case highlights ongoing tensions between political parties in West Bengal and underscores concerns about law enforcement and governance in rural areas.
