Supreme Court questions ban on news broadcast on private FM radio

News broadcast: SC questions ban
New Delhi, Oct 17: The Supreme Court here Thursday issued notice to the central government on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a voluntary organisation that sought news to be broadcast on private FM radio channels.

The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice P.Sathasivam, hearing the plea, asked: "How can you (the government) restrict FM radio channels from broadcasting news, as community radio channels are easily accessible."

Lawyer Prashant Bhushan appeared on behalf of the NGO Common Cause, which has questioned bar on broadcast of news on private FM radio channels.
