Saradha scam: Madan Mitra's bail cancelled by Calcutta High Court

Kolkata, Nov 19: The Calcutta high Court today cancelled the bail granted to Trinamool Congress leader, Madan Mitra an accused in the Saradha scam.

The court was hearing an application filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation which had sought to cancel the bail granted to Madan Mitra by a lower court last month.

The CBI had argued that Mitra is an influential person and could tamper with the evidence and also intimidate the witnesses. The CBI had said that Mitra needs to be in custody as the investigations into the Saradha scam is at a crucial juncture. They also said that they need Mitra for custodial interrogation.

Mitra's legal team had however argued that he would be available for investigation. They also assured the court that he would not tamper with the evidence and intimidate the witnesses.

Yesterday when the matter was heard, the Calcutta High Court had made a stinging observation against Mitra. It had said that he was so influential that his resignation too is not being accepted. Mitra had tendered his resignation as the transport minister of West Bengal last year after his name cropped up in the Saradha scam.

However chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee refused to accept the resignation and even defended him. However after the observations by the Calcutta High Court yesterday, Mitra tendered his resignation once again. The chief minister yesterday accepted the resignation with immediate effect.
