S Jaishankar mentions SS Rajamouli's 'RRR' to explain the reversal of power in global politics

Known for his witty remarks, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday mentioned about blockbuster film 'RRR' while talking about the 'reversal of power' in global politics.

During a conversation with the Raisina Dialogue, the minister was asked about India, a post-colonial country that dominates English sport of cricket, becoming a bigger economy than Britain. S Jaishankar said, "I'd call it rebalancing. It's switch-hitting. It is hitting the other way. In history, we have these ups and downs which often countries get a second or third bite of the apple. India in a very unusual position, once more decisively upwardly mobile which lot of other civilisational states aren't in a position to do,"

Former UK PM Tony Blair and former cricketer Kevin Pietersen were part of the conversation.

Adding humour to the conversation, S Jaishankar then mentioned about SS Rajamouli's movie 'RRR' and said they (Blair and Pietersen) were the "nice" (baddies) in the movie. "As far as the UK is concerned, It is a complex relationship. The most popular film in India last year was a film called 'RRR'. and that had to do with the British era. I am trying to put it delicately... you were the nice guys in the movie," the EAM added.

'RRR', which stars Ram Charan and Junior NTR in the leads, was one of the box-office hits of 2022 by earning over Rs 1200 crore. It follows a pre-Independence fictional story woven around two real-life Indian revolutionaries - Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem - in the 1920s.

S Jaishankar then explained how the world is changing be it in cricket or politics.

"The fact is when we have this complex history there would be the downside of it. There would be suspicions, there will be unresolved problems at the same time there will be bonds. There will be similarities. Cricket happens to be one of that. In terms of the shifting weight of cricket, when to actually tried to shift, people suggested we were better at the business of cricket than the game of cricket. I think by now barring this match (India lost to Australia in the third test), the game of cricket has shifted as well. That's the kind of things happening in the world today. The world is changing the old is new, and the new is the old," he stated.

India's flagship conference on geopolitics and geo-strategy Raisina Dialogue was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. The Ministry of External Affairs is organising the event in collaboration with the Observer Research Foundation (URF) from March 2-4.
