Money and muscle power is on full display ahead of the crucial Nandyal bypolls in Andhra Pradesh. Political observers, who have deemed Nandyal bypoll the fight for prestige between the TDP and YSP Congress, have estimated that close to Rs 100 crore are being spent only to bribe voters.

Each party is ready to pay anywhere between Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 per vote in the constituency. Apart from cash, liquor and food are also being distributed, according to some organisations. One such organisation, Jana Chaitanya Vedika, has even written to the election commission highlighting the corrupt practices and urging it to curb illegal practices.

"Both parties have made it a prestige battle because the results will reflect people's mood for the 2019 assembly elections. It is a closely contested battle and a lot of money is being spent. While it is impossible to calculate the same, our estimate is that close to Rs 100 crores are being spent by both parties," said Padmanabha Reddy, Secretary, Forum for Good Governance.

Many political watchdog agencies are touting Nandyal bypolls to be the most expensive electoral affair in Andhra Pradesh in recent times. While Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSR Congress Party has registered a complaint with the election commission accusing Chandrababu Naidu's TDP of using government machinery and money to lure voters, activists believe that voters are being bribed from both sides.

"In Nandyal Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore is spent on a mere Gram Panchayat President election. The money spent is only to purchase votes. In some cases, Rs 3,000 is given to each person from every party. A family with five votes will receive close to Rs 40,000 if they accept bribes from both parties," Padmanabha Reddy added.

The stakes are high and it is not a battle of prestige. While personal attacks are being made from both, the TDP and the YSRCP, money is also being made to flow to win the coveted Nandyal assembly constituency seat.
