Indefinite Rail Blockade Called Off: Trains to Run on Scheduled Routes
Following the withdrawal of an indefinite rail blockade by Kurmi organisations, trains under the South Eastern Railway (SER) and East Coast Railway (ECoR) jurisdictions are set to run on their scheduled routes across parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha. The decision comes after 11 trains were cancelled and 12 others diverted due to the blockade.
On September 19, an indefinite rail blockade imposed by Kurmi organisations across West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha was lifted. This development came as a relief to the South Eastern Railway (SER) and East Coast Railway (ECoR), which had been forced to cancel or divert several trains in response to the blockade. The withdrawal of the protest action means that all trains under SER and ECoR jurisdictions will now resume their scheduled routes.
Rail Services Disruptions

In anticipation of potential disruptions caused by the Kurmi-led rail blockade, both SER and ECoR took precautionary measures on Tuesday. At least 11 trains were cancelled while another 12 were diverted under these two railway jurisdictions. These actions were taken with a view to mitigate any adverse effects of the proposed rail blockade on regular train operations in Jharkhand and Odisha.
Resumption of Normal Operations
The East Coast Railway has declared that it would immediately commence normal train operations according to schedule following the calling off of the Kurmi Samaj agitation. Ranchi railway division chief public relation officer Nishant Kumar confirmed this decision stating: "All the trains that were earlier cancelled or diverted are being restored on their normal routes as per the directive of headquarters."
The Reason for Withdrawal
Ajit Mahato, a leader from Adivasi Kurmi Samaj in West Bengal explained why they decided to withdraw their protest action saying: "The indefinite rail blockade called by Kurmis has been withdrawn as our senior leaders are being harassed by police." He added that they will deliberate collectively on their next move during a meeting slated for September 30 in Purulia.
The Aftermath
This incident underscores how socio-political movements can significantly impact public infrastructure services. In this case, the rail blockade led to widespread disruptions in train services across three states - West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha. While the withdrawal of the protest action is a welcome development for both railway authorities and commuters, it also highlights the need for constructive dialogue between government authorities and protesting groups to prevent such disruptive actions in future.
In conclusion, while socio-political unrest can often lead to disruption of public services like railways, it is crucial that these issues are addressed through dialogue rather than resorting to measures that inconvenience the public. The recent incident involving Kurmi organisations' rail blockade serves as a reminder of this fact. As we look forward to September 30 when Kurmi leaders will decide their next course of action, one hopes that any decisions taken will not adversely affect public infrastructure or citizen's daily lives.
