Rahul Gandhi Is Not Indian, Has UK Citizenship, Claims Petitioner; Home Ministry Lists Matter

A petition regarding Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's alleged dual citizenship has created a buzz in the political arena. Taking cognizance of the petition, the Allahabad High Court asked the Centre to respond to claims that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi holds UK citizenship or not, which could lead to the revocation of his Indian citizenship.

Petitioner S Vignesh Shishir from Karnataka has requested a CBI investigation into Rahul Gandhi's citizenship status. The Additional Solicitor General, SB Pandey, was instructed to seek guidance from the Home Ministry within three weeks and present their findings at the next hearing.

Government's Response

The Union Home Ministry acknowledged receiving the petitioner's representation and stated it is being processed. They have scheduled the matter for December 19, 2024, promising to inform the court of any developments by then.

Talking to media, Mr. Vignesh expressed hope that the government would revoke Mr. Gandhi's Indian citizenship promptly. He claimed to have received direct confirmation from the UK government about Mr. Gandhi's name in their citizenship records.

Legal Implications

Mr. Vignesh emphasized that under Indian law, dual citizenship is prohibited. He stated that acquiring another nation's citizenship automatically cancels Indian citizenship.

"We have presented all the documents to the Allahabad High Court.... Under Indian laws dual citizenship is not allowed. Once someone takes the citizenship of another nation, Indian citizenship gets automatically cancelled," he added.

The court has mandated a clear decision on this issue by December 19, coinciding with the next hearing date. The Home Ministry must also report its findings to the court by then.

This case highlights significant legal implications concerning dual nationality and its impact on political figures in India.
