PVC Abode: Indian Army Commemorates Flying Officer Sekhon with Museum in Srinagar
The Indian Army has transformed a room once used by Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon into a museum at a military cantonment in Srinagar. This tribute marks the 80th birth anniversary of Sekhon, a 1971 war hero and Param Vir Chakra recipient. The Army shared images of this museum, named PVC Abode, on social media to honour his legacy.

Born in Ludhiana, Punjab, Sekhon displayed exceptional bravery during the Indo-Pak War of 1971. He sacrificed his life while defending the Srinagar airfield against six Pakistani Sabre jets in December of that year. His valiant efforts earned him the Param Vir Chakra posthumously, recognising his service to the nation.
Honouring a Hero's Legacy
The Indian Army's post stated, "Today, on the occasion of the 80th birth anniversary of Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, Param Vir Chakra #PVC Posthumous, Indian Army pays a solemn tribute to his indomitable spirit by preserving his room at BB Cantt, #Srinagar, as PVC Abode — a museum dedicated to his legacy." This gesture immortalises Sekhon's heroism and continues to inspire future generations with his story of courage and dedication.
Flying Officer Sekhon is remembered for his fearless defence of the Srinagar Airfield during the 1971 War. He remains the only Indian Air Force officer to receive the Param Vir Chakra. The award is given for acts of conspicuous bravery or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy.
Inspiration for Future Generations
The museum serves as a lasting tribute to Sekhon's bravery and commitment to duty. It aims to inspire Indians with tales of courage and devotion. The Army's post included tags like @IAF_MCC and @ChinarcorpsIA, highlighting their involvement in commemorating this war hero.
By preserving Sekhon's room as PVC Abode, the Indian Army ensures that his legacy lives on. His story continues to motivate many with its message of raw courage and unwavering dedication to the nation.
