Poll-Related Seizures in Maharashtra, Jharkhand Exceed 2019; ECI Ramps Up Vigil

As the assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand approach, with polling dates set for November 20 in Maharashtra and November 13 and 20 in Jhark, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has intensified crackdown on illegal inducements. Seizures totaling Rs 345 crore have been reported, marking a significant increase over the 201 assembly elections during which Rs 122.67 crore worth of illicit items were confiscated. This year, the seizures include Rs 114 crore in Jharkhand, Rs 175 crore in Maharashtra, and additional amounts from states hosting bye-elections.

The ECI's recent review meeting, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and involving chief secretaries, directors general of police, and other senior officials from Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and neighboring states, focused on assessing the law-and-order situation. The commission has issued directives to step up efforts to halt the flow of cash, liquor, narcotics, precious metals, and other freebies into these states to ensure fair elections.

During the meeting, Kumar highlighted the critical issue of politically motivated crimes in Maharashtra, urging a rigorous clampdown to maintain an equitable electoral environment. Additionally, in Jharkhand, the administration and law enforcement agencies have been advised to act impartially towards political entities, avoiding any biased exertions of authority.

The commission's strategy includes enhancing vigilance and intelligence operations to intercept the transport of contraband, such as narcotics, liquor, arms, and explosives, especially across inter-state borders. It has specifically instructed the involved states to monitor exit and entry points closely for any illegal movement of such items, ensuring strict surveillance and seizures.

This proactive approach by the ECI reflects its commitment to conducting clean and unbiased elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. By surpassing the seizure amounts of the 2019 elections by 2.3 times, the ECI demonstrates its determination to eliminate electoral malpractices and ensure a level playing field for all political parties. The counting of votes for both states is scheduled for November 23, marking the conclusion of this critical electoral phase.
