PM Modi Pays Tribute To Atal Bihari Vajpayee On 100th Birth Anniversary: A Legacy Of Leadership And Vision
On the occasion of Atal Bihari Vajpayee's 100th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the former Prime Minister's indelible contributions to India's political landscape.
In an article marking this special occasion, Modi described Vajpayee as the "architect of India's transition into the 21st century," highlighting his instrumental role in setting the stage for India's economic surge.

A Statesman Who Chose Ideology Over Power
Modi wrote about Vajpayee's long parliamentary career, particularly during his time in the Opposition. Despite facing immense criticism from Congress, including being called a "traitor," Vajpayee never allowed bitterness to affect his leadership. Instead, he stood firm as a statesman, inspiring countless individuals even after his tenure. Modi also shared personal moments with Vajpayee, emphasizing the privilege of learning from such a towering figure in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Vajpayee's leadership was marked by a consistent choice of ideology over political power. Modi recounted how Vajpayee remained committed to his principles, even when presented with opportunities to cling to power. He cited the former PM's decisions in 1996 when he chose to resign instead of engaging in opportunistic politics, and in 1999, when his government was defeated by a single vote but he preferred to accept the outcome with dignity.
The Historic Pokhran Nuclear Tests: A Test of Leadership
A significant moment in Vajpayee's tenure was India's nuclear tests in 1998, also known as 'Operation Shakti.' Modi recalled how, despite global backlash and international sanctions, Vajpayee stood firm in defending India's sovereignty. Modi described how the tests on May 11 and 13 not only showcased India's scientific prowess but also demonstrated Vajpayee's resolute leadership, sending a strong message that India would no longer bow to external pressure.
Commitment to the Constitution and National Integrity
Modi also touched upon Vajpayee's unwavering commitment to protecting India's Constitution, especially during the post-emergency era. The former PM played a crucial role in the anti-emergency movement and later agreed to merge his party, Janata Party, with others in the 1977 elections to safeguard India's democratic integrity.
Visionary Infrastructure and Technological Reforms
Under Vajpayee's leadership, India saw significant advancements in technology and infrastructure. Modi highlighted initiatives like the Golden Quadrilateral, which connected the length and breadth of India, as well as the expansion of telecom and communications infrastructure. These efforts were foundational in making technology accessible to citizens and paving the way for India's growth in the digital age.
Vajpayee's government also focused on rural development and connectivity, launching programs such as the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and driving the development of the Delhi Metro, which became a world-class infrastructure project.
A Legacy Beyond Politics
Prime Minister Modi concluded by encouraging people to rededicate themselves to fulfilling Vajpayee's vision for India. He emphasized that Vajpayee was not one to cling to power through opportunistic means, but rather a leader who consistently placed the nation's progress and ideals above political gain. His legacy continues to inspire generations, and his ideals remain a guiding light for India's future.
Vajpayee's centenary is not just a moment to remember his political achievements, but also a reminder of the integrity, leadership, and foresight that defined his era.
