PM Modi Bids Farewell To Retiring MPs, Lauds Manmohan Singh's Contribution In Rajya Sabha
Prime Minister Narendra Modi bid farewell to retiring members of the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, praising the contributions of his predecessor, Manmohan Singh, to the House. Modi commended Singh's dedication to strengthening democracy, recalling an instance when Singh arrived in the Rajya Sabha on a wheelchair to cast his vote.
In a pointed remark aimed at the Congress, Modi expressed gratitude to Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge for producing a ''black paper'' against his government, referring to it as ''kaala teeka'' (a ward against the evil eye) amidst the government's commendable efforts.

Modi also remarked on opposition MPs wearing black robes in protest, humorously labeling it a "fashion parade" in the Rajya Sabha. Extending his best wishes to all retiring members, Modi expressed hope that their experiences would benefit future generations.
A farewell ceremony for retiring Rajya Sabha members was scheduled for Thursday at Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar's residence. Members gathered for a group photo at 10 am at the Rashtrapati Bhavan before attending the farewell function at 6:30 pm.
Reflecting on past parliamentary moments, Modi recalled Singh's commitment during a trust vote in the old Parliament building, highlighting his sense of duty and dedication to democracy. Modi expressed hope that retiring members would continue to contribute positively to the nation's progress.
Parliament continued discussions on the Union Interim Budget 2024-25 and the Interim Budget of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Modi emphasized the significance of departing members witnessing the country's progress and commemorated their resilience during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Referring to opposition actions during the ongoing Budget Session, Modi viewed them as attempts to ward off evil and hinder the nation's progress. The session was extended to February 10 to present a white paper on the economy pre- and post-2014.
During his replies in both Houses of Parliament, Modi criticized the UPA government's economic management and policy paralysis. The day's agenda included a motion for the election to the Central Advisory Committee, to be moved by Union Minister Bupender Yadav.
