Pitru Paksha 2024 Begins Today: Important Shraddha Rituals, Significance, Start Date, And Time
Pitru Paksha, a sacred 15-day lunar period, is dedicated to honoring ancestors in Hindu tradition. During this time, it is believed that the souls of ancestors traverse between Pitru Loka (the realm of ancestors) and Bhu Loka (the earthly realm).
This period, which is marked by various offerings, begins on the full moon day or the day after in the lunar month of Bhadrapada according to the South Indian Amavasyant calendar.

For the North Indian Purnimant calendar, Pitru Paksha starts on the full moon day in Bhadrapada or the next day in Ashwin. In 2024, Pitru Paksha will commence on September 17 and conclude on October 2.
The final day of Pitru Paksha is known as Sarvapitri Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya, which holds particular significance. This day not only completes Pitru Paksha but also heralds the beginning of Devi Paksha, marking the start of Maa Durga's descent to Earth and the onset of Durga Puja.

Tarpan

Feeding the Brahmin
A crucial part of the Shraddha ritual is feeding Brahmins. This act of charity is performed to honor the ancestors. Prior to this, offerings are also made to crows, as they are considered representatives of the ancestors.
