Pitru Paksha 2024 Begins Today: Important Shraddha Rituals, Significance, Start Date, And Time

Pitru Paksha, a sacred 15-day lunar period, is dedicated to honoring ancestors in Hindu tradition. During this time, it is believed that the souls of ancestors traverse between Pitru Loka (the realm of ancestors) and Bhu Loka (the earthly realm).

This period, which is marked by various offerings, begins on the full moon day or the day after in the lunar month of Bhadrapada according to the South Indian Amavasyant calendar.

Pitru Paksha 2024

For the North Indian Purnimant calendar, Pitru Paksha starts on the full moon day in Bhadrapada or the next day in Ashwin. In 2024, Pitru Paksha will commence on September 17 and conclude on October 2.

The final day of Pitru Paksha is known as Sarvapitri Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya, which holds particular significance. This day not only completes Pitru Paksha but also heralds the beginning of Devi Paksha, marking the start of Maa Durga's descent to Earth and the onset of Durga Puja.

Pitru Paksha 2024: Start Date and Timing

Pitru Paksha 2024 will start on September 17 and end on October 2. On September 17, the Purnima Tithi will commence at 11:44 AM and conclude at 08:04 AM on September 18. Key muhurats for September 17 are as follows:

  • Kutup Muhurat: 11:51 AM to 12:40 PM
  • Rohina Muhurat: 12:40 PM to 01:29 PM
  • Rohina Muhurat: 01:29 PM to 03:56 PM

Pitru Paksha 2024: Key Shraddha Rituals

The Shraddha rituals performed during Pitru Paksha are essential for honoring ancestors. Here are the primary rituals:

Pindadan

Pindadan involves offering a mixture of rice, cow's milk, ghee, sugar, and honey, formed into rice balls (Pindas). This offering should be performed with devotion and respect to honor the deceased souls.

Tarpan

Tarpan consists of offering water mixed with black sesame seeds (til), barley (jau), kusha grass, and white flour. This ritual is believed to appease and satisfy the ancestors.

Feeding the Brahmin

A crucial part of the Shraddha ritual is feeding Brahmins. This act of charity is performed to honor the ancestors. Prior to this, offerings are also made to crows, as they are considered representatives of the ancestors.
