DK Shivakumar's Meeting With Former Teacher Who Shaped His Journey Turns Emotional

With just two days left before he takes charge as Karnataka's next Chief Minister, Congress leader DK Shivakumar shared a heartfelt message on the lasting impact of teachers and education after meeting his long-time mentor, Dr. K.P. Gopalkrishna, founder and chairman of the NPS Group of Institutions.

Taking to X, Shivakumar reflected on how lessons learned in the classroom continue to shape his approach to public service and governance. Seeking the blessings of the veteran educationist, he said the values instilled during his student years remain central to the responsibilities he carries in political life today.

Calling the meeting a privilege, Shivakumar highlighted the profound influence teachers have on shaping character beyond academics. He noted that educators help mould future leaders, public servants and citizens by instilling discipline, commitment and a sense of responsibility towards society.

"The lessons we learn as students often stay with us for life," Shivakumar said, adding that teachers play a critical role in shaping how individuals approach leadership, decision-making and service to the nation.

Reflecting on his own journey as an alumnus of the National Public School (NPS), Shivakumar credited Dr. Gopalkrishna's vision for transforming an educational institution into a platform that has inspired generations of students. He said the educationist's contribution extended far beyond building a respected school network, helping young minds develop the confidence to pursue excellence and contribute meaningfully to society.

The Deputy Chief Minister also shared a personal connection with the institution, noting that all three of his children studied at NPS. According to him, the values of discipline, learning and excellence that shaped his own education have been passed on to the next generation through the same institution.

Shivakumar said the principles he learned as a student - including discipline, dedication and a commitment to nation-building - continue to guide him in every responsibility he undertakes. He added that his recent interaction with Dr. Gopalkrishna served as a reminder of the enduring influence teachers can have on a person's choices and contributions to society.
