Political Parties' Response

The statement further revealed that suggestions were also sought from 46 political parties, and responses have been received from 17 parties to date. Notably, several opposition parties, including the Congress and the TMC, have voiced their opposition to the idea of simultaneous polls.

Public Notice and Committee Meetings

On January 5, the panel issued a public notice inviting suggestions from citizens to facilitate appropriate changes in the existing legal-administrative framework to enable simultaneous elections across the country. The Kovind-led committee, constituted in September 2022, convened its third meeting on Sunday.

Overwhelming Public Support

The committee's meeting yielded a total of 20,972 responses, with a remarkable 81% expressing their support for the concept of simultaneous elections.

Attendees of the Meeting

The statement highlighted the presence of several prominent individuals at the panel's meeting, including former leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, former chairman of the 15th Finance Commission N K Singh, former Lok Sabha secretary general Subhash C Kashyap, and former chief vigilance commissioner Sanjay Kothari. The committee also took note of suggestions provided by the Election Commission.

Consultations with Experts

In addition to seeking suggestions from the public and political parties, the Kovind-led panel has initiated consultations with eminent jurists, former chief justices of the Supreme Court and high courts, former chief election commissioners, and heads of the Bar Council of India, FICCI, ASSOCHAM, and CII.

Upcoming Meetings and Objectives

The committee is scheduled to reconvene on January 27 to continue its deliberations. The panel has already heard the views of the Law Commission on simultaneous polls and may invite them again for further discussions. The committee's mandate includes examining and making recommendations for holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state legislative assemblies, municipalities, and panchayats, considering the existing constitutional framework and statutory provisions.

The overwhelming public support for simultaneous elections, as reflected in the suggestions received by the Kovind-led committee, underscores the potential benefits of such a move in streamlining the electoral process and promoting efficient governance in India. As the committee continues its consultations and deliberations, it remains to be seen whether the concept of one nation, one election will gain the necessary consensus and support for implementation.
