Political Slugfest Erupts in Odisha Over Liquor Trade Controversy
Political parties in Odisha are embroiled in a heated debate following the Income-Tax departments seizure of black money and gold ornaments during raids on distilleries. The BJP accuses the state government of supporting the illegal liquor trade, while the BJD attempts to expose the BJPs alleged involvement. The Congress, meanwhile, claims to be unfairly dragged into the controversy.
In a recent turn of events, the Income-Tax department's seizure of approximately Rs 350 crore in black money and 3 kg of gold ornaments during raids on distilleries in Odisha has sparked a political slugfest among the state's three major parties.

BJP Accuses State Government of Patronizing Illegal Liquor Trade
The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held protests in all sub-divisions on Monday, accusing the state government of patronizing the illegal liquor trade. Party leaders and workers alleged that BJD MLAs, ministers, and state government officials were involved in the illicit liquor business in collusion with Jharkhand Congress MP Dhiraj Sahu.
BJD Holds Press Conference to Counter BJP's Allegations
In response to the BJP's accusations, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) held a press conference to expose the alleged evil designs of the saffron party. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty pointed out the discrepancy between the BJP's central leadership's criticism of the Congress for corruption and the Odisha BJP leaders' attacks on the regional party.
Congress Blames Both BJD and BJP
The Congress, caught in the crossfire, issued a statement blaming both the BJD and BJP for the controversy. Congress spokesperson Rajani Mohanty dismissed the allegations against his party as laughable and accused the BJD and BJP of being two sides of the same coin.
Political Interests at Play
Amidst the accusations and counter-accusations, analysts believe that political interests are driving the parties' reactions. The BJP, seeking to gain ground in Odisha, is using the opportunity to target the ruling BJD, while the BJD is attempting to deflect attention from the allegations by attacking the BJP.
The political slugfest over the liquor trade controversy in Odisha highlights the deep divisions among the state's major parties. As the parties continue to trade accusations, the focus should remain on addressing the underlying issues of black money and illegal liquor trade, ensuring transparency and accountability in the state's liquor business.
