Odisha CM Majhi Counters Patnaik's 'Name Changer', 'Jumla Sarkaar' Remarks
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi criticised BJD leader Naveen Patnaik for labelling the current BJP government as a "name changer" and "jumla sarkaar." During a debate on the 2024-25 budget in the assembly, Majhi defended the budget, stating it would pave the way for a developed Odisha by 2036, marking the state's centenary.

Majhi highlighted that the budget, presented on July 25, was a "game changer" rather than a "jumla," as claimed by Patnaik. He emphasised that this year's budget is a "people's budget," reflecting Odia pride. Amidst a walkout by opposition BJD and Congress members, Majhi accused the Patnaik government of creating schemes to benefit its vote bank.
Renaming Schemes: A Matter of Pride
Majhi questioned why renaming schemes after other legendary figures of Odisha was problematic. He pointed out that many schemes under the previous government were named after BJD president's father, former CM Biju Patnaik. Majhi argued that naming all schemes after one person would be unfair to other notable figures and would harm Odisha's pride.
He cited an example where his government renamed the Chief Minister's Power Development Programme to Mukhya Mantri Shakti Bikas Yojana. Majhi defended this change, stating it was merely translating the scheme's name from English to Odia. He stressed that many individuals have significantly contributed to Odia language, history, culture, freedom struggle, and state formation.
Honouring Contributions of Odia Legends
Majhi reiterated that recognising these contributions by naming schemes after various legendary figures is essential. He asked why it is wrong to honour these great sons of Odisha by naming some schemes after them. This approach, according to him, ensures that their contributions are remembered and celebrated.
The Chief Minister's remarks came during a heated debate on the general discussion on the 2024-25 budget. He firmly stated that the budget aims to establish a developed Odisha by 2036, aligning with the state's 100th anniversary. This vision underscores the government's commitment to long-term development and progress.
Majhi's defence of the budget and renaming of schemes highlights his government's focus on inclusivity and recognition of diverse contributions. By addressing these issues, he aimed to counter opposition claims and reinforce his administration's dedication to Odisha's growth and pride.
