Odisha CM Felicitates Indian Hockey Team for Historic Bronze in Paris Olympics
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi honoured the Indian men’s hockey team and its support staff for winning bronze at the Paris Olympics. Amidst drum beats, tribal dances, and cheers, they were warmly welcomed at Biju Patnaik International Airport.

The 16-member squad, including 11 players from the Tokyo Olympics bronze-winning team, made history by securing consecutive medals for the first time since 1972. During a special ceremony, each player received Rs 15 lakh, and each support staff member got Rs 10 lakh from the chief minister.
Recognition and Rewards
Amit Rohidas, the only player from Odisha in the team, was specially rewarded with Rs 4 crore. Sreejesh, who played his final game for India at the Olympics, received a lifetime achievement award and a cash reward of Rs 50 lakh for his outstanding contributions to Indian hockey.
Chief Minister Majhi praised the team’s historic win, stating, "The award is in recognition of the Indian men’s hockey team's stellar performance. Their dedication, skill and perseverance have not only brought pride to the nation but have also inspired the next generation." He reiterated the state’s commitment to supporting athletes and nurturing future talent in sports.
Grand Welcome and Celebrations
Earlier in the day, Sports and Youth Service Minister Suryabanshi Suraj welcomed the team at the airport and accompanied them to Kalinga Stadium with a grand roadshow. Hockey enthusiasts and locals lined up along the route to cheer for the players. Various cultural programmes were organised along their path from the airport to Kalinga Stadium.
Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey expressed gratitude, saying, "I want to thank the government of Odisha for the rousing welcome given to the Indian hockey team in Bhubaneswar. Every player in the team is very happy. It is a matter of pride that Odisha is the only state which is sponsoring the Indian hockey teams."
Historic Achievement
The Indian men’s hockey team defeated Spain 2-1 to clinch the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. India remains the only Asian country to qualify and win a medal in hockey at these games, a significant achievement for all involved.
Deputy Chief Ministers K V Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, and other dignitaries attended the felicitation ceremony. The previous BJD government led by Naveen Patnaik had supported the team during financial difficulties in 2018.
The state government has committed to sponsoring the hockey team until 2036 as part of its long-term support for the sport. This commitment underscores Odisha's dedication to fostering excellence in hockey.
Later, a photo session was held with Chief Minister Majhi and Sports Minister Suraj alongside the victorious hockey team. The event highlighted Odisha's ongoing support for Indian hockey.
