NSUI Urges PM Modi To Name Delhi University College After Manmohan Singh
The National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of Congress, has made an official appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to rename the upcoming Delhi University College in Najafgarh after former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, instead of the current plan to name it after Veer Savarkar.
The call for this change comes after Singh's recent passing and reflects a deep desire to honour his immense contributions to the nation's education system and governance.

PM Modi to Inaugurate Delhi University College and Campuses
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stones for three significant projects under Delhi University, including the Veer Savarkar College in Najafgarh, East Delhi campus, and West Delhi campus. The college in Najafgarh was approved by the university's executive council in 2021, with plans for these infrastructure projects to expand opportunities and increase seating capacities for students in the coming years.
The new campuses aim to offer improved access to quality education, aligning with the government's vision of expanding and upgrading India's educational infrastructure. The Delhi University Vice Chancellor, Yogesh Singh, expressed gratitude to the government for investing in these projects, which are expected to be operational in 1.5 to two years.
NSUI's Request: Rename the College in Honor of Manmohan Singh
In a letter addressed to PM Modi, NSUI President Varun Choudhary urged the government to rename the college in Najafgarh after Manmohan Singh. The appeal highlighted the former prime minister's unmatched contributions to India's educational sector, as well as his role in steering the country through monumental economic reforms.
Manmohan Singh passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92, and NSUI believes that naming an educational institution after him would be a befitting tribute to his legacy. The letter noted that Singh's contributions to India's growth, including the establishment of prestigious institutions such as IITs, IIMs, and AIIMS, were pivotal in shaping the country's academic landscape. His leadership and transformative policies helped propel India onto the global economic stage.
A Legacy of Reforms and Educational Institutions
During his tenure as Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh's government introduced numerous reforms, especially in the fields of education, healthcare, and economic policy. His leadership facilitated the creation of landmark institutions that continue to drive India's educational success today. His emphasis on merit-based education and global competitiveness made him a champion of the Indian education system. Singh also laid the groundwork for the Central Universities Act, which played a key role in establishing universities across the country.
NSUI believes that naming institutions after Singh would not only honor his legacy but also inspire future generations to pursue excellence. The student body also emphasized the importance of including Singh's life journey-spanning from a post-Partition student to a globally recognized economist-in academic curricula. This inclusion would allow students to learn from Singh's resilience, dedication to public welfare, and unwavering commitment to education.
NSUI's Call for Immediate Action
In addition to requesting that the Najafgarh college be renamed in honor of Singh, NSUI has also called for the establishment of a central university dedicated to his name. They have emphasized that immediate action must be taken to recognize his unparalleled contributions to India's educational and economic development.
The letter concluded by stressing that the naming of educational institutions after Singh would serve as a lasting reminder of his remarkable vision and legacy. It would also symbolize the government's recognition of his profound impact on shaping India's modern educational and economic landscape.
Conclusion: A Tribute to Manmohan Singh's Vision
NSUI's appeal underscores the desire to ensure that Manmohan Singh's transformative vision is perpetuated in the nation's education system. By renaming the upcoming Delhi University college after Singh and establishing more institutions in his name, the government would not only honor his memory but also continue his mission of empowering future generations through education. This gesture would be a fitting tribute to one of India's most influential leaders, whose legacy continues to inspire millions across the country.
