NCP to Go Solo in Delhi Elections, Ajit Pawar Names 30 Candidates

In a significant move, Ajit Pawar's faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is venturing into the political arena of the national capital by contesting the Delhi Assembly elections independently. This decision marks a departure from its current partnership with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in theayuti government in Maharashtra. The announcement of fielding 30 candidates underscores the faction's readiness to establish its presence in Delhi's political landscape without aligning with its ally in Maharashtra, the BJP.

Ajit Pawar's NCP has unveiled a list of candidates for Delhi's 30 Assembly seats, indicating the party's strategic areas of focus. Notably, Vishvanath Agarwal is set to challenge the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, for the prestigious New Delhi seat. This move pits the NCP against formidable opponents, with the BJP nominating former MP Parvesh Verma and the Congress fielding Sandeep Dixit, son of the late Chief Minister Sheila Dixit, thereby intensifying the competition for this seat.

Challenging Contests and Electoral Strategy

The electoral battle extends to the Kalkaji Assembly constituency, where NCP's Zameel will face off against Delhi Chief Minister Atishi. The BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri adds to the competitive dynamic, making it a challenging contest for the NCP candidate. Furthermore, the NCP's choice of Sanjay Mishra for the Karawal Nagar seat underscores the party's commitment to challenging the BJP's stronghold, as Mishra will compete against Kapil Mishra, replacing the incumbent MLA Mohan Singh Bisht.

The NCP's electoral strategy includes a diverse slate of candidates across Delhi, with Ratan Tyagi contesting from Burari, Mulayam Singh from Badli, and several others from constituencies like Mangol Puri, Shalimar Bagh, and Chandni Chowk. This broad representation demonstrates the party's ambition to make a significant impact across the capital, challenging both the BJP and other political contenders in a variety of key constituencies.

Historical Context and Electoral Prospects

This election marks a pivotal moment for the NCP, as it is the first time the party is contesting in Delhi following the split between the factions led by Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar in July 2023. Despite the NCP (united) having contested in the 2020 Delhi elections and not securing any seats, Ajit Pawar's faction is optimistic about making a strong showing this time around.

Delhi is set to witness a single-phase election on February 5, heating up the political atmosphere with a triangular contest among the AAP, BJP, and Congress. The results, slated for announcement on February 8, are eagerly anticipated, as they will reveal the impact of Ajit Pawar's NCP faction's decision to contest independently and gauge its electoral appeal in the fiercely competitive landscape of Delhi politics.
