NCP Leader Baba Siddique Shot Dead in Mumbai, Raising Law and Order Concerns Ahead of Elections
In a tragic incident, Baba Siddique, a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party and former Maharashtra minister, was fatally shot by three individuals in Mumbai's Bandra area. Two suspects have been apprehended, according to officials. This event has led the Opposition to raise concerns about the state's law and order situation, especially with assembly elections approaching next month.

Siddique, aged 66 and a former Congressman, was taken to Lilavati Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The attack occurred outside his son Zeeshan Siddiqui's office near Colgate ground in Nirmal Nagar, Bandra East. Siddique had represented the Bandra West constituency three times in the assembly and was a notable Muslim leader in Mumbai, known for his connections with Bollywood celebrities.
Law and Order Concerns
The incident has sparked criticism from various political figures. Sharad Pawar, NCP SP president, expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation. He criticised Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis for handling the situation lightly and suggested that the ruling party should take responsibility and resign. Balasaheb Thorat of the Congress legislature party also questioned how a leader with Y-category security could be killed, highlighting serious law enforcement issues.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that Mumbai police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar informed him about the arrest of two alleged shooters. One suspect is from Uttar Pradesh and another from Haryana, while a third suspect managed to escape. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also oversees the home department, visited Lilavati Hospital following the incident.
Political Reactions
Deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar expressed his shock at Siddique's death on X (formerly Twitter). He described the attack as "extremely unfortunate and condemnable," mourning the loss of a friend and colleague who advocated for minority rights and secularism. Pawar assured that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted into the attack.
Shiv Sena UBT leader Aaditya Thackeray called the murder shocking and said it reflects poorly on Maharashtra's law enforcement. He criticised what he described as a complete collapse of administration and law and order in the state. Praful Patel, NCP working president and close friend of Siddique, expressed his inability to find words to describe his feelings about the loss.
Condolences from Political Leaders
BJP leader Ashok Chavan, who previously worked with Siddique in Congress, shared his shock over the news. In a post on X, Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala expressed deep sorrow over losing a dear friend from his Youth Congress days. The incident has united leaders across party lines in mourning Siddique's untimely demise.
The tragic death of Baba Siddique has raised significant concerns about safety in Maharashtra. With elections on the horizon, political leaders are demanding accountability from those responsible for maintaining law and order. The investigation into this high-profile case will likely be closely watched by both political figures and citizens alike.
