National Herald Case: Sonia and Rahul Gandhi Face Court Notice Following ED Allegations

On Friday, a Delhi court issued formal notifications to Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald money laundering case. The development follows a chargesheet issued lately by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), alleging massive financial violations among the Congress leadership.

Special Judge Vishal Gogne took cognisance of the ED's chargesheet and emphasised the importance of due process in court proceedings. "The right to be heard at any stage breathes life into a fair trial," the judge stated. The court has scheduled the next hearing for May 8, when it will decide whether to issue official summons after hearing arguments from the accused's legal counsel.

National Herald Case Sonia and Rahul Gandhi Face Court Notice Following ED Allegations

The lawsuit began as a private complaint filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on June 26, 2014. Following this, the ED launched an inquiry in 2021. The dispute revolves around the now-defunct National Herald newspaper and its parent firm, Associated Journals Limited. The ED claims that AJL's assets were essentially transferred to a new non-profit entity, Young Indian, in which Sonia and Rahul Gandhi had significant stakes.

According to the chargesheet, the Congress party extended an unsecured loan of approximately Rs 90 crore to the AJL. This loan was subsequently given to Young Indian for only Rs 50 lakh.

The ED claims that this agreement gave Young Indian control over AJL's assets, which are estimated to be worth more than Rs 2,000 crore and distributed across key cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Lucknow.

The Enforcement Directorate has also stated that the entire deal entailed money laundering totalling around Rs 988 crore and has named various Congress leaders in its chargesheet.

The Congress party has retaliated against the central government, accusing it of exploiting federal investigative institutions for political objectives. Party President Mallikarjun Kharge recently remarked in New Delhi that the claims are part of a concerted effort to damage the reputation of senior Congress officials.

The Congress has stated that Young Indian is a non-profit organisation and has denied any misconduct in the acquisition or management of AJL assets.

With the next court hearing scheduled on May 8, all eyes will be on the legal proceedings to decide the next steps in this politically significant issue.
