Narendra Modi govt struggling with porn sites in India, Supreme Court told

New Delhi, Aug 29:

sites in the country.

Representative of the government told the apex court if they block one porn site, thousand other sites surfaced the next day. Speaking in the court on Friday, Aug 29, the government spokesperson said, "There are around four crore websites and when we block one, a new one comes along."

The court, however, asked the government to come up with solution during the next hearing which has been scheduled to be held after six weeks. The Chief Justice of India was quoted as saying, "Law, technology and governance have to be synthesised to control pornographic materials on the Internet."

Earlier Internet Service Providers (ISPs) had told the Supreme Court that it would be practically and technically impossible for them to block pornographic sites without orders from the court and government and they cannot be made liable for objectionable contents of the sites.

The government, however, claimed that they have been facing the problem while blocking sites as most of such sites are operated from foreign country. Indian government cannot exercise any degree of control over them.

The government's statement in the court was a reply to one petition which had urged the Supreme Court to ban child pornography and to block adult porn sites in India.

The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) said, "Offenders' minds are mostly fuelled by pornography as the sexual offender or rapist achieve his gratification not from sexual release alone but also from the thrill of domination, control and power."

The PIL also mentioned the infamous Dec 16, 2012 gangrape in Delhi. It was reported that all six offenders had seen porn in their mobile phones before committing such heinous crime.
