Nagpur Clashes: Fadnavis Blames Rumors, Vows Strict Action Against Rioters

Nagpur witnessed unrest after rumors spread that a holy book was burned during a right-wing protest demanding the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb. The violence erupted in two areas, leading to vandalism of homes, arson at a medical clinic, and the torching of several vehicles.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, addressing the media, provided a detailed account of the events. "The incident began when a replica of Aurangzeb's tomb was set on fire. A complaint was immediately lodged with the police. However, some individuals took to social media and podcasts, falsely claiming that a sacred 'chadar' was burned, which led to widespread unrest," he said.

He added that those responsible for spreading these rumors online would be treated as co-accused in the case. Authorities have already identified 68 inflammatory social media posts, which have since been taken down. Fadnavis assured strict action against those who incited violence through misinformation.

As tensions escalated, rioters pelted stones, torched vehicles, and attacked shops. The police managed to restore order within 4 to 4.5 hours, though several officers-including three DCP-level officials-were injured in the process.

So far, 104 individuals, including 11 minors, have been arrested, with more detentions expected. Fadnavis also addressed reports of an attack on a female police officer, confirming that while stones were thrown at her, allegations of molestation were untrue.

To support those affected, he assured that compensation for damaged vehicles would be provided within the next three to four days. Restrictions in the area are also set to be lifted gradually starting today.

Fadnavis made it clear that those responsible for the destruction would be held financially accountable. "The cost of the damage will be recovered from the rioters. If they refuse to pay, their properties will be seized and sold," he stated, even hinting at the use of bulldozers if necessary.

He emphasized that those who attacked police officers would regret their actions, vowing continued action until every rioter is arrested. "Nagpur hasn't seen a riot like this since 1992. This kind of violence does not align with our city's culture," he asserted.

Additionally, Fadnavis mentioned reports suggesting a possible Bangladeshi connection to the unrest, though he clarified that it was too early to confirm and that investigations were ongoing.

Responding to Ajit Pawar's remark about protecting Muslim communities, Fadnavis reassured that no patriotic citizen, regardless of religion, would face injustice-but those guilty of inciting violence would not be spared.
