Neurotoxins Identified in Samples from Mysterious Deaths in Jammu and Kashmir Village
Health experts have identified neurotoxins in samples from 14 individuals who died in a remote Jammu and Kashmir village over the last month. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of these deaths. Officials reported that two more family members, including a six-year-old girl, succumbed to the mysterious illness, raising the death toll in Rajouri district to 14.

The fatalities, which include 11 children and three adults from three families, have alarmed residents of Badhaal village in Koteranka sub-division. The government has dispatched health teams to collect samples and assess potential health risks. Extensive microbiological studies revealed no viral, bacterial, or microbial infections as the cause of death.
Health Experts and Government Response
Experts suggest that the deaths may be localised with possible epidemiological links. An official spokesman conveyed this information during a meeting led by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo. The meeting involved divisional and district administrations and health experts from national institutions to evaluate measures taken to identify the cause of these deaths.
The government has implemented several actions, such as deploying rapid response teams, analysing human and animal samples, and testing water and food items. Assistance from renowned health institutions across the country is also being sought to uncover the actual causes behind these fatalities.
Investigative Measures and Coordination
Chief Secretary Dulloo emphasised the need for health and police departments to collaborate closely in assessing reports from reputable institutes to pinpoint the cause of these deaths. He stated, "The reports furnished by different institutions are now available with us and more are going to be received soon. These should be enough to conclude the investigations and reach to possible reasons for these deaths reported from this particular village."
Dulloo requested suggestions from health experts on future actions. He instructed the police department to utilise their resources effectively in studying these reports alongside other scientific methods. The health department was also urged to examine these reports for leads on what might be causing these deaths.
The situation remains under scrutiny as authorities work diligently to uncover the reasons behind these tragic occurrences. The focus is on ensuring comprehensive investigations are conducted using all available resources and expertise.
