'Mukhya Mantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana' Is To Get Women Votes: Maharashtra BJP MLA
The Maharashtra government recently rolled out the 'Mukhya Mantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana' as part of its budget at the end of June sparking widespread discussion. The initiative offers financial assistance of Rs 1,500 monthly to disadvantaged women aged between 21 and 65. This scheme is designed to support women, particularly from economically weaker sections, by providing them with a steady income to help improve their living conditions. The Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar announced the scheme on June 28, highlighting that it targets women with an annual income of less than Rs 2.5 lakh. Moreover, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured that the first installment would be disbursed before Raksha Bandhan, underscoring the government's commitment to strengthening women's roles socially, financially, educationally, and politically.
Controversy Surrounding the Scheme

However, the scheme has recently been embroiled in controversy due to comments made by BJP MLA Tekchand Sawarkar. A video of Sawarkar, representing the Kamathi assembly constituency in Nagpur, has been circulating on social media. In it, he suggests that the 'Ladki Bahin Yojana' was launched with the ulterior motive of garnering votes for the BJP in the upcoming state assembly elections. "Why did we do such a big Bhangard (uproar)?... It was so that the day the election box comes in front of your house, this Ladli Behan of mine will vote for the 'lotus' (the BJP's symbol). For this, we made this jugaad (arrangement)," Sawarkar stated in the video.
This admission has stirred up considerable trouble for the Mahayuti government, which has been introducing several schemes as the elections approach. Until now, accusations of the scheme being a vote-securing tactic were primarily made by leaders of the Mahavikas Aghadi, but Sawarkar's public acknowledgment has lent credence to these claims.
Opposition's Response to the Controversy
The opposition has seized upon Sawarkar's statement, criticizing the government for manipulating welfare schemes for electoral gains. The Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, Vijay Wadettiwar, highlighted the issue by sharing the controversial clip on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing that even BJP's own leaders recognize the political motivations behind the scheme. He argued that Sawarkar's speech is evidence that Mahayuti leaders have been deceiving the public, asserting that the 'Ladki Bahin Yojana' is more about securing votes than it is about benefiting women.
The scheme's introduction and the subsequent controversy have sparked a broader debate about the intentions behind government initiatives, especially in the lead-up to important electoral battles. This discussion is particularly relevant in Maharashtra, where the political landscape is highly competitive and schemes targeting women's empowerment can significantly influence voter sentiment.
Concluding the discussion, it's clear that while the 'Mukhya Mantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana' holds the potential to make a positive impact on the lives of many women in Maharashtra, the controversy surrounding its political implications has overshadowed its benefits. As the state moves closer to its assembly elections, it will be interesting to see how this debate evolves and what effect it will have on the electorate's perception of the government's welfare initiatives.
