Media Outcry as Delhi Police Accused of Assaulting Journalists
New Delhi, Mar 26 - The alleged assault on photojournalists by the Delhi Police during a protest by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has sparked outrage among media bodies, leading to calls for a thorough investigation. The Press Club of India and the Delhi Union of Journalists, in separate statements, expressed their dismay over the incident and demanded action against the officers involved.

The Press Club of India strongly criticized the police's actions, highlighting the importance of journalists' safety while covering public events. According to a statement from the club, photographs released by the Working News Cameramans Association depicted some officers grabbing photojournalists by their throats and threatening them with severe consequences. This has raised serious concerns about press freedom and the treatment of journalists in the field.
In response to these alarming events, the Press Club of India has called for a high-level inquiry led by a retired high court judge. The aim is to address the misconduct of the Delhi Police and ensure that photojournalists can perform their duties without fear of violence or intimidation. This move underscores the need for accountability and justice for those affected by the incident.
Furthermore, the Delhi Union of Journalists has reached out to both the Election Commission and the Union Home Ministry, urging them to take disciplinary action against the officers who allegedly assaulted the journalists. This incident occurred amidst coverage of an AAP protest, which was organized following the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
The confrontation between photo and video journalists and police officers reportedly began after an argument near the Patel Chowk metro station. Following the altercation, a group of camerapersons approached senior officials at the Delhi Police headquarters to voice their complaints. Although no formal complaint was lodged, police representatives assured the journalists that they would investigate the matter.
This incident has highlighted ongoing concerns about press freedom in India and the challenges journalists face while reporting on protests and public gatherings. The demands for an independent investigation and accountability from law enforcement agencies reflect broader issues related to media rights and safety in the country.
