MCD Removes Over Half a Million Political Ads in Delhi Pre-Elections

In a significant move to ensure adherence to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has undertaken a massive cleanup operation across its jurisdiction. An official document revealed that a total of 5,20,042 political advertisements have been removed from various locations within the 12 zones managed by the MCD. This action aligns with the directives issued by the Election Commission (EC) following the announcement of the election schedule on March 16.

Over 500K Political Ads Cleared in Delhi

The types of advertisements taken down include hoardings, banners, wall paintings, signages, and flags. This comprehensive effort is part of the preparations for the general elections, with Delhi slated to cast its votes on May 25 during the sixth phase of the seven-phase polling process. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4.

The breakdown of removed materials includes 2,57,280 hoardings, 1,92,601 banners or wall paintings and posters, 40,022 removable signages, and 30,139 removable flags. This initiative is in response to the EC's order that mandates the removal of any political advertisement that promotes a political party or leader from government, public, and private properties within 24 hours of the election schedule announcement.

The MCD's jurisdiction spans across 12 zones: Rohini Zone, City SP Zone, Civil Lines Zone, Karol Bagh Zone, Narela Zone, Keshavpurm Zone, South Zone, West Zone, Najafgarh Zone, Central Zone, Shahadara North Zone, and Shahadara South Zone. The removal of these advertisements is a critical step in ensuring a level playing field for all political parties and candidates in compliance with the MCC.

This action by the MCD underscores the importance of maintaining neutrality and fairness in the electoral process. The adherence to the MCC is crucial for conducting free and fair elections, allowing voters to make informed decisions without undue influence from political advertisements. As Delhi gears up for its polling day on May 25, such measures are essential in upholding the democratic values enshrined in India's electoral system.
