Rise in Extortion Cases Hampers Peace Efforts Amid Manipur Unrest
The districts of Imphal valley, amidst the violent unrest in Manipur, are witnessing an increase in extortion-related complaints. The state government's efforts to restore peace are being obstructed by armed men posing as police commandos, according to Additional Secretary Home Maharabam Pradip Singh.
Manipur, a state in Northeast India known for its diverse culture and rich history, is currently grappling with a surge of complaints related to extortion in the Imphal valley districts. These areas have been significantly affected by violence, posing challenges for law enforcement agencies working tirelessly to restore peace and normalcy.
Extortion Complaints Hampering Restoration Efforts

In a recent press conference held on September 19th, Additional Secretary Home Maharabam Pradip Singh expressed concern over the situation. He revealed that efforts towards restoring peace were being obstructed by armed individuals posing as police commandos. According to him, these miscreants are involved in acts such as extortion and threats which have undermined genuine police operations.
"We have received reports from different valley districts that there is an increase in complaints related to extortion and threats," Singh said. He assured that the state police force has taken these issues seriously and are committed to addressing them promptly.
State Police Taking Measures Against Armed Miscreants
Singh further elaborated on the steps taken by the Manipur Police Department against these armed men. These include setting up check posts at strategic points throughout the affected regions and conducting thorough search operations. The aim of these measures is not only to apprehend those responsible but also deter potential wrongdoers from committing similar acts.
The Additional Secretary appealed to citizens for their support during this critical time. He urged people not to believe unverified information circulating on social media platforms without proper verification.
Ethnic Violence Triggers Crisis In Manipur
The current crisis was triggered following ethnic violence that broke out on May 3rd when a Tribal Solidarity March was organised in hill districts of Manipur resulting into widespread unrest across several parts of the state. Since then, more than 175 people have been killed and several hundreds injured in the violence.
Manipur has a long history of ethnic tensions, with frequent clashes between different tribal communities. The recent surge in extortion-related complaints adds another layer to the complex socio-political landscape that characterizes this northeastern state.
In conclusion, as Manipur continues to grapple with the aftermath of ethnic violence and a rise in extortion cases, it becomes crucial for both law enforcement agencies and citizens to work together towards restoring peace. More importantly, such incidents underscore the urgent need for comprehensive strategies that address not only immediate security concerns but also long-term social harmony among diverse communities residing in this region.
