Manipur Violence: SC Seeks Details From Biren Singh Govt To Detail Looted, Encroached And Burnt Properties

The Supreme Court has instructed the Manipur government to provide details about the buildings that were burnt, looted, and encroached upon during the ongoing violence in the state. Additionally, the Court requested information on the actions taken against the perpetrators.

A bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar directed the Manipur government to submit the information in a sealed cover. The bench also asked for details about the owners of the affected properties.

"We direct the state government to submit the following details-buildings that were burnt, partially burnt, looted, and trespassed or encroached upon, along with the name and address of the property owners. The report must also outline the measures taken by the state to ensure that individuals who have encroached are prosecuted as per the law," the bench stated, as reported by Live Law.

The Court also requested a report on weapons seized by security forces during the unrest. The next hearing is scheduled for January.

In response to the violence, the apex court had earlier formed a three-member judicial committee, comprising former High Court judges, to oversee the rehabilitation of the victims. Former Maharashtra police chief Dattatray Padsalgikar was also appointed to monitor the investigation into the criminal cases related to the violence.

The ethnic violence in Manipur, which began on May 3, 2023, with a 'Tribal Solidarity March' protesting the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status, resulted in nearly 200 deaths and hundreds of injuries.
