Mamata Banerjee To Lead INDIA Bloc? TMC Demands Top Seat, Samajwadi Party Backs Vs Congress

The Samajwadi Party has shown support for Mamata Banerjee as the leader of the INDIA bloc, believing it would strengthen the alliance after recent electoral defeats in Haryana and Maharashtra. However, Congress has expressed opposition to this idea. The differing opinions among allies became evident when Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee mentioned her readiness to lead the coalition.

Support for Mamata Banerjee

Samajwadi Party's national spokesperson, Udaiveer Singh, suggested that the INDIA bloc should consider Banerjee's proposal. He stated, "If Mamata Banerjee has expressed any desire, the leaders of the INDIA alliance bloc should consider it and give her support. This will strengthen the alliance. Mamata Banerjee took the lead in stopping the BJP in Bengal. We have sympathy for her. We have an emotional bond with Mamata from before."

Congress Faces Criticism

The Congress party faced criticism from its allies for not accommodating them during elections in Haryana and Maharashtra. CPI general secretary D Raja remarked that Congress needed introspection, saying, "Congress needs to introspect. It didn't accommodate alliance partners in the Haryana and Maharashtra polls. The results would have been different in the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls had Congress heard INDIA bloc partners."

RJD's Perspective on Leadership

Meanwhile, RJD's Mrityunjay Tiwari credited Lalu Prasad Yadav as the true architect of the opposition alliance against BJP. He noted that Yadav initiated the first meeting of this coalition in Patna. Tiwari acknowledged Mamata Banerjee's efforts against BJP in West Bengal but emphasized Bihar's upcoming political battle in 2025.

The friction within the INDIA bloc was also apparent during Parliament's winter session when TMC and Samajwadi Party distanced themselves from Congress-led protests over a bribery case involving Gautam Adani.

Despite these internal disagreements, Congress remains firm against Mamata Banerjee leading the INDIA bloc. Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad commented on this stance by stating, "Mamata Banerjee thinks so, but we don't. Her party runs as she says; we work as Congress says."
