Amethi, once known as Congress bastion, is one of the prominent Lok Sabha seats, out of a total of 80 in Uttar Pradesh. The people of Amethi elected Congress leaders like Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi before BJP's Smriti Irani took over the throne in 2019.
The region was initially known as Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar and later was renamed to Amethi in 1967. This seat covers the entire Amethi district.
According to the Election Commission's 2019 data, the total number of electors in this constituency was 17,43,515 and it comprises the assembly segments of Tiloi, Salon (SC), Jagdishpur (SC), Gauriganj, and Amethi.
Except for Salon, all parts of Amethi district comes under this constituency, which is in Raebareli.
In 2014, Rahul Gandhi became MP from this seat with a victory margin of 408,651 votes, while Smriti Irani of BJP got support from only 300,748 votes. BSP's Dharmendra Pratap Singh received 57,716 votes, and AAP candidates and renowned poet Dr Kumar Vishwas received 25,527 votes.
In 2019, the table turned around. BJP's Smriti Irani defeated Congress MP Rahul Gandhi by a thin margin of 55,000 votes. Smriti Irani had got 468,514 votes, while Rahul Gandhi received 413,394 votes. 3,940 voters decided to press the NOTA button.
However, this time, Congress has decided to place a bet on long-time serving party worker and leader KL Sharma, while Rahul Gandhi will contest from her mother's Raebareli seat. Raebareli was vacant after Sonia Gandhi decided to move Rajya Sabha citing her ill health.
If the reports are to be believed, then the battle of Amethi is neck and neck, where a little swing of votes can change entire picture.
