Krishna Janmashtami 2024 Date: Will It Be Celebrated On August 26 Or 27?
Krishna Janmashtami is a revered festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna. This joyous occasion marks the arrival of Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who is believed to have been born on the Ashtami Tithi during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadra.
Observances And Rituals

The festival is celebrated with fervour and devotion by Hindus across India and around the world. Devotees typically fast and pray to Lord Krishna, seeking his blessings for positivity and spiritual guidance. The celebrations are characterised by various rituals and practices:
1. Temple Visits: Devotees visit temples at midnight, engaging in prayers and chanting mantras. Temples are beautifully decorated with diyas (oil lamps), lights, and flowers. The idols of Lord Krishna are ceremoniously bathed in panchamrit and water, and offerings such as clothes, jewellery, and bhog (food) are made to 'Bal Krishna'.
2. Festive Offerings: Throughout the day, followers maintain a fast and break it only after offering a variety of foods, including milk, sweets, kheer, butter, and chappan bhog, to the deity. The jhoola ceremony is another highlight, where Lord Krishna's idol is placed on a decorative swing, and devotees seek blessings one by one.
Krishna Janmashtami 2024: Date
Krishna Janmashtami 2024 falls on August 26. The Nishita Puja, a sacred midnight ritual, will take place between 12:01 am and 12:45 am on August 27. This period is particularly significant as it is believed to be the exact time of Krishna's birth. Devotees use this time to immerse themselves in prayers and devotional songs.
Additionally, the Dahi Handi festival will occur on August 27. During this event, participants, known as 'Govindas', form human pyramids to break the 'Dahi Handi', symbolising Krishna's playful act of stealing butter as a child.
For those observing the Parana (the breaking of the fast), the timing can vary. According to Dharma Shastra, Parana can be performed after 03:38 pm on August 27, following the end of the Rohini Nakshatra. Alternatively, the fast may also be broken as early as 05:57 am on the same day, after sunrise.
Krishna Janmashtami offers an opportunity for devotees to celebrate and honour the life and teachings of Lord Krishna, reflecting his enduring influence and the values he represents.
